Kefalonia is one of the biggest of the Ionian Islands based on the west side of the Greek mainland . An unknown fact is that Kefalonia can be spelt in various ways and some of these ways include Kefallinia Cephalonia and Cephallonia. Many people believe that the island is said to be named after Cephalus who was an individual from Greek Mythology and was the son of Hermes and Herse.
Kefalonia is a stunning island with green grass blue seas and sandy beaches. It is also deep in history. All the Ionian Islands which included Kefalonia were united back with Greece in 1864 after spending hundreds of years being passed from diverse leaderships such as Roman ruling and Norman ruling.
1953 for any inhabitant of the island will be remembered as a time when a series of disastrous earthquakes hit the island one of them recording 7.3 on the Richter Scale. The earthquake ruined a vast number of homes and resulted in several tens of thousands of dollars in damages and it is said that of the 125000 that inhabit the island 100000 left to seek a better life elsewhere. Evidence can be seen all across the island of Kefalonia of the great earthquake this can be from ruined buildings to uneven cracked surfaces that crumbled buildings and structures.
As one of the larger Greek islands Kefalonia gets plenty of visitors each year during peak periods mainly of English and Italian holidaymakers and this has been improved since the release of a film that was filmed on the island of Kefalonia in 2001.
One of the most famed resorts on the island is Lassi with its lively atmosphere that is idyllic for all kinds of holidaymakers. Lassi plays host to many shops that are great for gift ideas so you wont get bored. In the day time there are water sports sweeping sandy beaches and quiet sheltered coves for you to spend your relaxing holiday at.
Lassi consists of the most eye catching beaches on the island. With abnormal rocky formations and spectacular fishing bays Kefalonia is home to fabulous scenery and peaceful relaxing beach breaks . If you are interested in exploring the island there are regular cruises and trips that take you to other parts of the island and nearby islands.
Scuba diving can be a great experience especially while your on your holiday it will make it a more memorable time leaving you wanting more. You dont have to be fully qualified or experienced even if youre a novice you will get the chance to discover a completely different environment. Choose from ordinary diving or night diving and see some startling sites that will stay with you for years to come. If you really wanted to you can also work towards earning a recognised scubadiving certificate.
