East Cowal

East Cowal offers superb views of the magnificent Loch Eck as it scythes through the centre of the Cowal Peninsula surrounded by hills covered in thick forest. The loch is a perfect illustration of Cowal’s rugged and spectacular scenery. It also displays how peaceful the place can be where various pastimes such as fishing and walking can be enjoyed.

To the north of the main town Dunoon lies the beautiful Cowal Bird Garden with its exotic and colourful collection of rare birds. The celebrated Benmore Botanic Gardens continues this theme of natural colour situated at the head of the Holy Loch you can spend an entire afternoon wandering through the various floral arrangements and very rare exotic shrubs.

Further to the East lies the pleasant lochside villages of Kilmun Strone Blairmore and Ardentinny where you can wander along a signposted footpath through the Argyll Forest Park which leads to Carrick Castle on the shores of Loch Goil.

There is over 54000 acres of the Forest Park land which is used for many activities including walking cycling and organised horse riding. Further north is Lochgoilhead at the head of Loch Goil with its extensive outdoor leisure facilities including swimming and golfing.

Nearby in Arrochar the Arrochar Alps offer some magnificent peaks for some serious hillclimbing. These mountains rise above the head of Loch Long dominating the steep road to the Rest and be Thankful viewpoint.
